Commenting on the GMC national training survey 2021, which has highlighted an increase in burnout among doctors in training Dr Rob Hendry, Medical Director at Medical Protection, said:

“These survey results are troubling, though sadly not surprising. Doctors in training have needed to react and adapt to a difficult and evolving environment throughout the pandemic, and for many this involved redeployment to a high-pressure area outside of their comfort zone. Many other trainees have struggled to gain exposure to the necessary practical experience in specialities such as surgery, with some needing to repeat their final year of training. I do not underestimate the pressure and anxiety these situations could cause.

“When doctors feel burnt out it is not only concerning for them but for patient care and the wider team. It is important that we develop a much deeper understanding of how Covid-19 has impacted on training, workloads and mental wellbeing, and ensure appropriate support structures are in place for doctors.”
