Commenting on the Crowdfunding appeal for Dr Bawa Garba -
Dr Rob Hendry, Medical Director at the Medical Protection Society (MPS), said:
“MPS has an unparalleled wealth of experience in supporting doctors faced with Gross Negligence Manslaughter charges. We have supported Dr Bawa-Garba for the last 7 years, funding and providing the best possible independent legal advice and considering all possible avenues at every stage, including Queen’s Counsel representation at the Court of Appeal. The complexity of these cases and nature of the criminal justice system makes them notoriously difficult.
“Our commitment to this case remains strong - for our member and as a matter of principle for the profession - and we have been exploring an appeal since the High Court judgement was handed down. Our members are telling us that they have real concerns about the impact this ruling will have on openness and the duty of candour. We understand and share the strength of feeling amongst our members and the wider healthcare community, and the Crowdfunding appeal is testament to the sentiments of the profession.”
