Commenting on the Health Secretary’s call for all NHS consultations to be conducted online:
Dr Pallavi Bradshaw, Medicolegal Lead, Risk Prevention at Medical Protection, said:
“Covid-19 has forced rapid adoption of telemedicine, allowing patients to access healthcare and for clinicians to work remotely. The benefits have been unquestionable and there is no doubt that it will remain a fundamental tool in practice.
“It is however important to be aware of the medicolegal and other challenges telemedicine presents; it requires the use of new skills and knowledge, adaptation of communication and a recognition of its limitations. If consultations are to become predominately online, the digital inequalities across society also need to be considered and addressed to avoid some groups of patients being left behind.”
