Responding to the GP contract announcement on 31 January 2019 Simon Kayll, Chief Executive at MPS said:

"With GP contract negotiations finalised and funding arrangements for the new scheme agreed, there are only two months left before the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice begins.

"Whilst Medical Protection welcomes the latest information, it is essential that the Government sets out more detail about the next steps that GPs need to take. Further information has been promised in February and this cannot come soon enough to ensure a smooth transition.

"The Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice will only provide indemnity for clinical negligence claims arising from work under NHS contracted primary medical services. In order to safeguard their careers, GPs will need to have membership of an MDO alongside state indemnity.  Medical Protection can provide support with complaints, disciplinary proceedings, coroner’s inquests, GMC investigations or a claim arising from private or fee-paying work.

"Members working in general practice can expect to pay less for their membership with Medical Protection once the Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice is introduced. This is because the potential cost of clinical negligence claims accounts for a significant amount of the membership subscription they currently pay. Removing or reducing the indemnity component when they move to the new scheme will therefore reduce the cost of their membership subscription."
